Lindsay

Middle School Math and Social Studies teacher and GED tutor

I have a Bachelor's Degree in Middle Childhood education with a concentration in both math and social studies and a Master's degree in Education. I also have 10 years' experience working with special needs students. I also have experience in tutoring for all GED subjects and I have my own GED textbooks that I prefer to use that I will bring with me. I often use my own personal experiences to relate to my students; I do have ADD and dyslexia and I use the same tricks that helped me to help ...

dyslexia

autism

I have an education background and around ten years experience working with kids and adults with disabilities. When I worked as a respite provider the majority people that I worked with had Autism. The one thing I learned is that every autistic person out there is different. One case, is not like the next and so to understand and help them, you have to understand and know them. You have to know their quirks, what they love to do, what they are most knowledgeable in and what areas will set them off. Once you know that you can progress to the next stage and help them to learn and to make connections, but if you don't have a connection with the child, and stick to a very structured schedule, you may not get anywhere with the child and that is the first and most important thing when you work them. But each autistic child has the capabilities to learn and to grasp a new concept, they just need someone who understands that and them in order to help them. And I do. I haven't done any one-on-one tutoring with somesome with autism before, but I have been a care provider, and I have worked in early childhood centers with multiple autistic children. It is that experience that I am basing my experience off of.

ADD/ADHD

I have my Master's in Education and I work for a non-profit organization that works mainly with people with disabilities, at-risk, disadvantage and low income. With this background I have worked as a tutor for multiple youth that have various disabilities. I have also tutored a young man for a few years who had severe dyslexia and ADHD. Many times it was trial and error just to find out what worked for him. I understand that people with ADD/ADHD need to take frequent breaks for their own sake and to keep from overloading them with information. I know some people need background noise to study and concentrate while there are others who need the entire house to be quiet. I use my own personal experiences of having ADD to relate to my students. When they express frustration for not being able to concentrate, I am able to understand exactly how they feel. If one way doesn't work for a student then I change tactics, and try something else. Everyone learns differently.

Aspergers

I have my Master's in Education and over 10 years' work experience working with people with special needs. I have a cousin who has Aspergers. When he was a child the family didn't know what was wrong with him. He was born a preemie with some extensive problems so the way he acted was always chalked up to something that happened when he was born. At the time there was just autism, and there wasn't the autism umbrella as there is now. The definition of Aspergers should have a picture of my cousin right next to it. He is extremely intelligent but he doesn't have any social skills at all. It drives my dad nuts but it has taught me to have patience with him. He just needs to be reminded of proper behavior and everyone else who interacts with him needs to be patient. I've worked with his family when he was having trouble in school and helped him to find a college that would work best for him.

Eleanor B. from Cincinnati, OH

She is an excellent tutor! She is very patient, thorough and responds quickly via email or text messaging. My teenage son stated, "I like her. She is good!"

Lindsay has been working with my daughter for the past 7-8 months. My daughter has multiple learning disabilities and is not very motivated. My daughter is an adult but emotionally functions at a much younger age. Lindsay has been very patient and has persevered with a somewhat challenging student. She has managed to work with a student who has a limited attention span and a short term memory deficiency. I am so happy we found her because I am not able to provide the guidance and follow through my daughter needs at this time.

Lindsay worked on factors and other math skills. She is very patient and willing to work with our son on different strategies to help him learn the way he learns. Thanks

SARAH S. from Cincinnati, OH

Lindsay helped me with math step by step. I feel more confident in my ability to learn new things and refresh my knowledge with older things
