A tutor who cares

I have been a teacher for over 18 years and have had experience in teaching kindergarten, 1st grade 2nd grade and 4th grade. I have also been a tutor during many of those years helping children with special needs. It is my greatest joy to see students enjoy learning and succeed in school. In my years of experience I have had many students who were having a difficult time with their assignments and, after giving them one on one help and showing them how to maintain good study habits, they ...

autism

As a tutor in private school I worked with many special needs students INCLUDING those with a diagnosis of autism. While these students have struggles, they are able to accomplish much if taught in a loving and disciplined way. The family of one student in particular had been told by different educators that he could not learn. He was given a diagnosis of severe autism. The principal put him in my class because he know my qualifications..... the #1 qualification being experience. Within a month this student was reading and learning vocabulary words to the amazement of his family. My method was to set goals that challenged him but were attainable. The feeling of success is very important to these students. I continued to tutor him after that with much success. I have followed the same procedure with many other students with the same diagnosis with similar results. I have found it important to take each of these students at their own pace and use as many visuals as possible..... visual learning for these students is key to unlocking the door. As I have helped other students that have autism, I know that I can help those who come through the WyzAnt program and look forward to having that opportunity.
