Aspergers
As a recent education graduate, my program provided balanced coverage and training of the foundations of exceptionalities, and the instruction specifically designed to meet the needs of students with exceptionalities, which includes content, procedures, environment, and technology. I am familiar with the special education process from early identification to the delivery of services. Children with Aspergers syndrome have social interaction impairments and develop restrictive, repetitive interests, beliefs and activities that impair their level of functioning. Individuals with the disorder do not possess a significant delay in cognitive ability. As a general education teacher, I have taught students with Aspergers syndrome in my chemistry and physical sciences course with success. I implemented environmental and curriculum modifications and strategies that created an accepting environment for my students.
ADD/ADHD
Children with ADD/ADHD have a persistent pattern of inattention and/or hyperactivity-impulsivity that is more frequently displayed and severe than what is typically observed in individuals at a comparable level of development. As a general education teacher, I have taught students with ADD/ADHD in my chemistry and physical sciences course with success. I implemented environmental and curriculum modifications and strategies that created an accepting environment for my students. I taught students specific strategies to increase organizational skills and goal setting. In addition, skills to improve listening and attending skills and help in following instructions, mnemonic strategies to aid memory, self-instruction, and self-regulation, monitoring and reinforcement are some of the few strategies I utilized when teaching students with this disorder.
