ADD/ADHD
As an Occupational Therapy Assistant, I currently work with children with ADHD/ADD, as well as other diagnoses. I am trained in sensory integration techniques to help kids with attention disorders be more successful in the classroom. I am able to do this by giving them sensory input, such as deep pressure, vestibular or proprioceptive inputs, etc.; and then engaging them in an non-preferred activity. The activity can be anything that may be difficult to them, but I normally introduce academic lesson plans for math, writing, etc.
Aspergers
I am a certified Occupational Therapy Assistant and work with special needs children on a daily basis. I have been trained to handle the behaviors that can arise when engaging a child with Aspergers in a non-preferred task. I have also been trained to use sensory input to help calm/arouse the sensory systems to help ease into transitions and non-preferred activities. In addition to the behaviors and sensory input, I am also trained in fine motor areas (handwriting, motor coordination, visual motor/perception, etc.).
autism
A large part of my caseload consists of children with ASD. I am a certified Occupational Therapy Assistant and work with special needs children on a daily basis I am able to use a multi sensory approach to draw children in that are on the spectrum into an activity and eventually allow them to learn new skills. I do this by incorporating an activity that they enjoy, working on a non preferred task, then incorporating a new enticing activity that they will enjoy. I also incorporate a variety of sensory inputs for calming and arousal of the sensory systems, in order to be more successful in completing the activities. I have extensive knowledge on how to incorporate difficult tasks for these children in a meaningful and purposeful manner, as well as handling the behaviors that may be present with these children.
