Darby

22 Years Teaching Elementary Students

I am a mom of three boys and a teacher of 22 years in the classroom and am currently teaching at a permanent online school. I am native to Oregon, obtaining both my undergraduate degree in Elementary Education from Oregon State University and my Masters of Education degree from George Fox University. I have taught from kindergarten to 6th grade including counseling and learning disabilities. Over the past 22 years I have tutored many of my past students as well as students from referrals. ...

ADD/ADHD

After teaching for 17 years in education, I have had many children who have been categorized as ADD/ADHD and on an IEP. I also have taught many children who did not have an IEP for ADD/ADHD, yet had a difficult time focusing their attention towards academics. In addition, I tutored a child very closely from 5th grade through 8th grade who was ADD/ADHD. He is currently 21 years old and is attending PCC. I am very familiar with strategies needed for children who are ADD/ADHD yet also recognize children are different in their academic needs.

Darby has been tutoring my second-grade daughter for a few months now and we love her (and so does my daughter). My kiddo has made incredible progress in reading, writing and math since Darby began tutoring her!

We are very impressed with Darby. My daughter has repeated first grade and is still falling behind in school and also has issues with focusing and staying on task. What Darby is accomplishing with her is far more than me and my husband could accomplish in twice the time. I appreciate her vast experience teaching in the public schools and tutoring students with a wide range of behavioral issues. She is fun, warm, yet organized and motivating. We are currently trying to handle the issue of the very long commute which is making it quite expensive.

We found Darby just a few months ago through WyzAnt, and she has been fabulous. Our son is an above-average 4th grade student, attending school in the Beaverton school district. But with the class sizes increasing every year, he has had a very difficult time keeping up with the pace of the classroom - while getting little-to-no one-on-one attention from his teacher. His math comprehension was slipping, and he just hasn't been able to follow the instruction he is given in class. He's a high-energy guy who is easily distracted. He gets bored, especially if he doesn't feel like he's getting the attention he needs to progress. We needed some outside advice, before he fell any further behind. Darby was immediately a huge help. She connected positively with our son right away, and was able to give him a level of motivation going forward that we just weren't able to provide him. Because Darby also has kids that are students in our school district, and because has also worked in the district herself, she knew exactly where our son needed to be to be caught up. She has been knowledgeable in the multiple methods of teaching that the math curriculum requires, and has been effective in communicating them to our son in ways that he's able to comprehend. She has also been an amazing help in regards to homework. Instead of feeling like we are totally on our own, trying to help him understand processes that we ourselves find confusing, a scene that can frequently lead to a lot of emotions for all of us, we know that Darby will be able to clarify anything that we aren't able to explain ourselves. Darby has absolutely helped to pull our son's math comprehension up to where it should be, and that has given him more confidence and incentive to succeed in the classroom. He knows that even if he doesn't understand something, that Darby will be able to put it into terms for him that he can understand and apply. We are so excited to have found her! She's a devoted mom who absolutely understands how difficult it is to always keep your kids succeeding in school. Whatever academic challenges our son may face in the future, it's a huge relief to know we can check in with Darby whenever we need the extra support.

Darby has been a wonderful tutor for my daughter. She has a gentle and warm yet firm demeanor that my daughter really respects. She is always on time, easy to communicate with, professional, and well-prepared. She is easily able to keep my daughter on task and working hard for an hour which I find amazing! I really couldn't have asked for a better tutor!

Both myself and my son absolutely LOVE Darby! We moved to the area about 3 months ago and the work that she has done with Sam on a weekly basis has really eased the transition into his new school. My son is a very shy person but he warmed up to Darby right away. She is extremely patient, warm and encouraging with my son. She really provides a lot of positive reinforcement that has been so beneficial to him. I must also add that she has been all of these things and more for myself. Darby has been a wonderful support to me as I navigate my way through a new school system. She really has gone above and beyond with both my son and myself. Darby provides excellent communication of each tutoring session and is very flexible with any changes in schedule. I would recommend Darby in a heartbeat to anyone!

I would highly recommend Darby. I put out a request to help my 8th grader improve his penmanship, which is kind of an obscure request, but she had an organized plan, did detailed analysis, and ultimately made tremendous inroads in helping him. The other part is that my son was quite hesitant about being tutored, but her warm and calm demeanor quickly put him at ease and he ended up actually enjoying the lessons. I would not hesitate to contact Darby again for any tutoring needs in any subject.
