I am a retired teacher and school counselor. My entire career revolved around children and helping them be successful. Even now as a mother and grandmother I enjoy nothing more than spending time with a child to make learning fun, engaging and meaningful. Learning can be fun, engaging and self-satisfying. I like to meet the student and parents, talk about what is needed, what the goals are and do a quick assessment as to the child's strengths. Then we work from there. Since I've worked with s...

I taught elementary grades 1-8 for 27 years either as a classroom teacher, a TAG specialist or a school counselor. During the summers I often worked as a reading specialist, a TAG specialist or a resource specialist. I have a Masters degree in Elementary Educations and a Masters degree in Counseling and Psychology with a special certification in TAG and a Reading Endorsement. With that kind of a experience and education background I have expertise working with student with special needs which include ADD/ADHD. These people are some of the brightest, most creative energetic and enthusiastic learners we have in our schools. I love working with them! I helped them learn time management skills, organizational strategies, relaxation methods, and general coping mechanisms. I actively worked with my students so they learned that this is not a disability but management challenge; certainly not an excuse for failure! I am pleased to say that both my students and I were very successful.

My student was in a really stressful state over her repeated attempt at the SAT. Mary Ellen was great at calming her down and giving her strategies to deal with the stress. Thanks.

Mary Ellen tutored my son in preparation for a standardized test. She made monotonous, boring material fun. She's very insightful and caters her lessons to your child's learning styles. My son is 13 and really liked going to his tutoring sessions. She is patient and has a great sense of humor. I would whole heartedly recommend her!

I needed to raise one of my SAT scores, so I started studying with Mary Ellen. I haven't received the new scores yet, but I went into the test with a new confidence. I highly recommend her!!

My 2nd grader attends a magnet school and was struggling to keep up with Math in the short amount of time allocated in the school day. We initially saw Mary Ellen to primarily help with Math and handwriting skills. The handwriting skills improved almost immediately, and Mary Ellen worked very hard with my daughters math teacher to find out where we needed to work. Her math teacher even commented to me that she has never worked with such a thorough tutor. She also worked with her on general study skills which is an ongoing battle for many parents and children. I feel my daughter is now able to apply some of these disciplines to 3rd grade when she starts which has a much higher homework volume. Mary Ellen was very easy to work with and thoroughly engaged my child during their time together, and I always had a good idea of where they were at after each lesson. Thanks Mary Ellen!

My son was reluctant to go to a tutor, but he instantly felt at home with Mary Ellen. At the end of the session he was happy and motivated. He is looking forward to meeting again with Mary Ellen to gain much needed study/organizational skills that will help him achieve his goals.

Mary-Ellen is awesome, she is an amazing tutor and she teaches you in a way where it is super easy to learn. She's super nice and warm, I feel absolutely comfortable with her. She is incredibly smart, I mean like super smart, she gets every answer right when we practiced with the practice tests. And she bakes you amazing cookies on your birthday!

I really appreciated the thorough preparation Mary Ellen went through to tutor my son. She spoke with me several times by telephone and e-mail and asked specific questions about the level of his reading and the progress reports from school so she had a good idea of where he stood. When we got there she was fun and friendly and easily drew him out of his shyness with questions and enthusiastic responses to his reading skills. We thought she did a great job and my son didn't want to leave when the lesson was over!!

From the father: Mary Ellen was very supportive of my son's needs. She emphasized the strengths and worked on the opportunities all in a "we can do it" approach with helpful notes back to me. Went into the test feeling confident and supported. From the student: Not only did she know the ins and outs of teaching at any and all levels Mary had the emotional skills to connect with myself on a personal level. That level of connection really helped me in overcoming some big problems with my learning disorders. She went out of her way to find new research of my dyslexia, complaining with tools to combat this small problem I was with Mary for a year and a half. I have no complaints for anything I want everyone to know how committed she was in helping me with the struggles that she helped me overcome. I am proud to tell others of all her work she willing gave me. I am pleased to say that from her help I was able to score higher on the SAT. She gave me needed practice in difficult AP classes for High School. Today I am on my way to attended University of Portland and can’t wait to drop by and say hello. She is a five star without a doubt.

Mary Ellen was amazing. She helped me raise my SAT scores from CR-380 Math-540 Writing-420 Total 1,340 to CR-540 Math-550 Writing-430 Total 1,520. We primarily focused on Critical Reading since that was my lowest score and in one month with her it went up 160 points. In general, she is a wonderful person with great teaching methods. I have no doubt that if I could have spent one more month of preparation with her that my scores would be in the 1600 range easily. I strongly recommend her to anyone looking for a tutor.

Mary Ellen was great at discovering the root causes of my daughter's difficulty with math. She spent time trying to assess the classroom environment, teaching methods and level of discipline. She made an appointment with my daughter and teacher to create awareness in both parties. I feel confident that her involvement will affect the behavior of the teacher, as well as, our student. Overall, a very professional and thorough approach.

Mary Ellen is a wonderful and warm person who has a real grasp of quilting. She is able to put together her knowledge in a way that is accessible and easily grasped by her students. I felt very comfortable with her style of teaching. As a beginner I felt she was able to quickly assess my where I needed to begin and made sure that she was clear about the goals I wished to accomplish. I highly recommend her!

Mary Ellen has been a great tutor! She is very patient and seems to know many test strategies and helpful hints. She took my learning style into account which makes me more at ease. I enjoy how my lessons are structured.

Mary Ellen spent about an hour by phone and another hour in person getting to know my son, his strengths, his personality and his challenges before even starting a tutoring session. This type of commitment shows the degree to which she cares for her students and what she does. I was equally impressed at her tutoring and interpersonal skills during her session, reflecting a degree of warmth and high expectation that made an impact.
