I was a Sp Ed middle school teacher in a NYC public school. I was in a self contained 12:1 class for the past three years. I have had students with various disabilities, including Down Syndrome, Autism, Aspergers as well as multiple emotionally disturbed children. Every year that I taught ELA, my students showed growth. I taught a variety of students with disabilities in a NYC public school. Many of my students were either medicated or non medicated ADD/ADHD. I have a few ways of handling this. My favorite is using a stress ball with the student or working with a reward system.
