I earned a Ph.D. in oceanography, and spent some time during and after graduate school conducting research into deep-sea environments and glacial-interglacial climate changes. I then turned to teaching. In the past twenty years, I taught French at a local high school, and I taught geology and oceanography at colleges and universities in the northeast.
