ADD/ADHD

I earned a masters degree in special education from Grand Canyon University and have a Tennessee state certification in special education. I have worked closely with many students with ADD/ADHD. Organizational skills are one key component of learning - keeping binders organized, writing assignments in an agenda, breaking up assignments into manageable pieces, etc. I work closely with students in the beginning and then slowly fade my help until they begin to independently organize themselves. Other work with ADD/ADHD students includes setting up a proper work space, time management, empowering students to work with their teachers on focusing in class, and working with parents to teach time management at home.

Aspergers

I earned a masters degree in special education from Grand Canyon University and have a Tennessee state certification in special education. I have taught at local Chattanooga high schools for the last several years and have had students with Aspergers on my caseload. I currently work with autistic students who are mainstreamed but need extra support during the day. We work on social skills such as having conversations, how to work with a group, how to handle frustrating situations, proper hygiene, etc. We also work on organizational and time managements skills and explore and prepare for life after high school. I have found that working with students with Aspergers can be as much of a learning experience for me as it is for them. I find these students to be incredibly bright children who can shine academically if given the proper tools.

We work on skills to help them be successful in the classroom - listening skills, knowing when to take a break, answering questions, working in groups, getting organized, completing tasks, etc. Just as important though, we work on social skills to help these students find success in the classroom and in real life - how to carry on a conversation, how to use proper body language and hygiene techniques, how to control emotions, etc.
