Academic and Organizational Tutoring

“Passionate…flexible in thought…creative…adventurous…independent…motivated…tenacious...” are just some of the ways people have described me, personally and professionally. I have worked in a variety of academic arenas, including substitute teaching (elementary, middle and high school); undergraduate colleges; graduate schools; and independent organizations. While serving as a clinical psychologist (1994 - 2012), my work involved helping youth/people clarify their goals and how best to addre...

Aspergers

As a clinical psychologist for 24 years, I worked with youth having Aspergers and have conducted testing with this population (Theories of Mind Tasks). I have helped them learn and work on social skill progression, use of language in social discourse, and have helped them learn more about their style of interacting with friends, educators, family members and other community figures by using texts and other forms of self-education. I have also been helpful teaching other members of the family and social community more effective ways for teaching and interacting with this population, and these interventions have proved effective.

ADD/ADHD

I have worked with many youth having a diagnosis of ADHD. That work has involved coaching them in organizational habits (over 10 years), methods for managing distraction and behavior control, and exploring various mediums for learning material. I also have experience in ADHD assessment and a knowledgeable understanding of the implications this can have on learning. Further, I consulted to various private schools (Sage School - intellectually gifted students) and acquired many skills working with bright youth, having ADHD and the academic, emotional and social implications of this challenge.

Talia S. from Newton, MA

I have been working with James for my Psychology class the past couple months, and since then I have not only aced all my quizzes and assignments, I actually can understand the course material , and be ahead of the class. He truly goes above and beyond to make sure I am understanding everything. I've never seen a tutor work as hard as he does with me. Truly amazing.

Megan M. from Dedham, MA

I had an excellent experience working with James. I reached out to him with very little notice for last minute help before an exam and he was extremely accommodating. He was very perceptive and able to assess my needs in terms of help with content, as well as how to best present the information for my learning needs. I presented him with a very dense and complicated Powerpoint full of psych meds, and he was extremely knowledgeable and able to teach the information to me in a way that made a great deal of sense and was easy to memorize. He quickly came up with a plan for me to best organize the information and worked to make sure that I was as prepared as possible for my exam. I could tell that he really cared about my success, and wanted me to feel as confident as possible. I had a great experience working with James and would highly recommend him as a tutor.

James brings an open and welcoming atmosphere when he comes to out sessions, even if he comes to you. He really cares about your success, not just because you're paying him, but because he likes what he does. He treats you almost like family. He knows what he's doing, and he's flexible about scheduling. Strongly recommended.
