MA and Spec Ed Certified Tutor for Home School Grades 2-6

Retired from full time work in the public schools, I continue to substitute teach and tutor and am currently available to take new students in grades 2-6. I'm able to assist with the entire elementary level curriculum and grade 6 language arts, and I can provide specialized materials to help if your child is dyslexic. As for what I bring to the table, I have an MA in Educational Psychology with concentrations in Special Education and Counseling and a BA in Speech and Theatre Arts with a mi...

hard of hearing

Students who are hard of hearing need to be positioned correctly so they can do any necessary lipreading. The teacher or tutor needs to be sure hard of hearing students have understood verbal instruction before moving on. I cannot sign, however I've worked with both fully deaf students who were in my class with with the assistance of an assistant who could sign and with students who had hearing losses, with or without assistive devices and hearing aids.

ADD/ADHD

Many students in special needs programs have difficulty focusing, are easily distracted, and may be impulsive. ADD and/or ADHD are frequently at the root of school failures or difficulties. I am certified in generic special education and have experience and expertise in working with students both diagnosed and undiagnosed who exhibit such behaviors.

Aspergers

Students with Asperger's syndrome may require more behavior management, structure, and understanding to be successful in school subjects. My work as a special educator and counselor has provided insight and experience in teaching students with this diagnosis.

autism

I'm certified in Generic Special Education by the state of Texas, and many of the students I taught and counseled in my 21 years in the public schools had autism spectrum disorders, from Asperger's Syndrome to severe developmental disorders and full blown autism. Students with autism need structure, patience, and an environment that eliminates or reduces excessive stimulation. They may need visual cues, augmentative communication devices, and assistance in learning social skills and cues. As with all students, individual interests, abilities, and goals are taken into consideration when planning curriculum and instruction for autistic students.

theatre

My BA is in Speech and Theatre Arts, and I work professionally as an actress in stage plays, films, and commercials. From Viola Spolins's Creative Dramatics to improvisation, pantomime, acting games and exercises, theatre history, and formal stagecraft and performance opportunities, theatre arts is a fun elective and for some students the springboard to formal study in college and careers in the performing arts as it was for me. I can provide private instruction and/or coaching that will help you or your child succeed in theatre arts, whatever the grade level. Whether it be for UIL events, acting class, theatre history, or stagecraft I will help you prepare for your performances or tests.

SAT reading

I get top grades from students who have worked with me on improving their SAT Reading scores. It doesn't take long to learn the tricks that will give you an edge. I look at your strengths and weaknesses and help you to cut through to the tips that will be most useful to your personal success.

SAT writing

My method of teaching SAT writing is to provide a model for the thought process required to answer the questions and write the essay. I find out where you are in the process of preparation, how you might have done on previous attempts, and focus on your strengths and weaknesses to make the most progress in the shortest time possible.

GED

I'm a certified Texas teacher who worked with special needs students for 21 years before retiring. My areas of specialty are any of the reading, writing, and English based subjects as well as Speech and Drama. I prepared all three of my own children for the GED, and all three of them passed on the first try. The GED science and social studies sections are reading based, so even though I was not a science or social studies teacher, I would be able to help in these areas.
