Andrew

College instructor happy to help students accomplish learning goals!

I have experience working with people individually and in groups, as an undergrad Psychology intern, a cognitive skills trainer, a counseling student, an adjunct instructor and an academic coach. As an undergrad intern, I worked with elementary school children as a tutor and a mentor. As a counseling student, I have worked with various populations, from grade school students (grades 4-8; making healthier choices) to adults (stress, anxiety, career decisions, bereavement, etc.) to older adults...

elementary science

Whether there are certain concepts of elementary science that your child is not understanding or if you are just wanting your child to develop an appreciation for it, I can help build that appreciation. I can create a learning environment for your child. I can develop a lesson plan of any given concept of elementary and use visual and hands-on means to help your child understand and appreciate them. For example, if the given topic was photosynthesis. I would go over the basic structures of the plant first with illustrations (so that your child may recognize it in a textbook) then with an actual plant. I would go as far as guiding your child while they either plant a seed or by an already growing flower and go over its development as it grows! Please, let me know if you have any questions!

elementary math

I have experience tutoring and mentoring elementary school students. I aim to keep the content of meetings with the child peculiar to him/her. An example of an approach I use is constructing several lists of (for example) addition problems and have the student add each problem as quickly as they can. I work with him/her at that pace until I feel they can keep a certain speed of pace, employing a metronome. Increasing the tempo when I feel he/she can consistently keep up with it. Please, let me know if you have any questions!

reading

I have experience tutoring elementary students for my undergrad practicum. Reading is a pastime that everyone should have (but even the content of the reading is important to consider). My approach will be more or less different with each child I meet with. As my profile suggests, I shape the content of my meetings with the child's needs- the cookie cutter. An example of an approach I would use would be constructing a list of (for example) two-letter syllables (e.g., as, te, mi) and ask the child to read them, exercising their ability to identify sounds of written syllables. Please, let me know if you have any questions!
