I am a current advanced chemistry and regular chemistry teacher (preAP, GT, and regular). I am also trained in AP Chemistry. I have been teaching at this capacity for 14 years. As far as my approach, thorough and complete understanding of chemistry is a must. Just knowing chemistry on a superficial level does not make you a good tutor. I have had to adapt and create easier approaches to chemistry problems for all students. Chemistry is a science of steps which are in fact quite easy....
