Grad School Statistics (Course Work or Thesis/Dissertation)

Want to UNDERSTAND those stats tests in your class or for your project? Want help with your dissertation or thesis? If you are stuck learning SPSS or SAS, I can help. I find research fun and make stats simple, working mostly with grad students who seek me out for thesis research +/or their classes. I apologize for it, but stats classes often are not taught well in understandable language. Social work or psychology students are common, but of course I am open to whatever kind of program you...

Patient, knowledgeable, helpful - covered what I needed, although I probably needed a more advanced skill-set to benefit from the level Karen teaches at.

Karen is a superb stats teacher. She is patient, enthusiastic, and supportive. She takes the time to explain each and every step and why. She has helped me clean my data in SPSS, replace missing data, and showed me how to effortlessly create syntax. She has also helped me to refine my research questions so I feel like I have a clearer understanding of what it is that I want to look at and what analysis is needed to answer them. She is easy to reach via phone/email and you can set up a virtual meeting or meet with her in-person. I highly recommend Karen—if you are looking for someone to teach you how to use SPSS, help you set up and interpret your data, she is the one!

I was in a very challenging stats class and Karen was incredibly helpful in explaining concepts in a way that was understandable. I am lucky to have found her!

Daniel D. from New York, NY

I am a graduate student with a limited income who needed help with my Probability and Statistics class. Because of this, I initially sought the help of tutors who charged less. What I found was that these people usually either didn't know their subject or didn't know how to teach, in some cases both. They also often lacked those qualities that characterize true professionals. There is truth to the saying, "You get what you pay for." Karen charges a little more than some other tutors on WyzAnt (but also a lot less than tutors who charge hundreds of dollars an hour.) But let me assure you that she is worth every penny. You won't regret it. (Remember, you can save a lot if you buy a package in advance.) She has all the qualities that make up a really good tutor: 1) Experience- she has been doing this a long time (she is not just an undergrad looking for some beer money) 2) A thorough knowledge of her subject 3) She is patient and kind 4) She is positive and encouraging 5) She knows how to teach (most people forget that teaching is a skill and a talent. Some people haven't been trained or don't have the aptitude for it.) 6) She is a professional who arrives on time and comes prepared 7) She really cares about her students and gets excited when they make progress or achieve their goals. (I was pleasantly surprised to receive an encouraging text from her before my final and another text after to find out how I did!!! Most tutors wouldn't go the extra mile like that.) Karen has the special and rare ability to tailor her teaching to each individual student. Students are different. They require different approaches, as unique as they are. Karen knows how to adapt to this and present the material to each student in the way they need. Because I work in and study Educational Psychology, I am familiar with a lot of studies on the effectiveness of various teaching methods. Research clearly shows the great gains a student receives in comprehension and mastery of material from tutoring, as opposed to traditional classroom instruction. But research also shows huge differences between gains that students get from amateur tutors vs. professionals. Amateur tutors sometimes don't even bring about the gains that students get in the classroom. But a professional tutor brings about gains that can be 1 or 2 standard deviations above the classroom norm. The conclusion: a professional tutor is different from an amateur and worth every penny. Because of Karen, I went from a sense of despair over my poor performance in the Stats class to literally acing weekly quizzes (which I had once failed) and doing great on the final. I only wish I had gone to her earlier. My early quiz and midterm grades would have been so much higher!!!

When I decided to search for a tutor to help me with my dissertation there were so many tutors claiming to know statistics but Karen not only knows statistics she is bilingual in stats! She has been so patient and helpful with me giving me the confidence and the motivation to get through this process. I am so grateful I met Karen. Since working with her I know I will finish my dissertation and actually understand stats better. She is definitely worth the money and she is flexible with her time and schedule. Don't hesitate contacting her. She has been a pleasure to work with. Thanks Karen!

Roshan D. from New York, NY

A great tutor worth the money and really takes you through how she does her stuff. I have asked Karen B. to perform some SPSS stats with me and she did this very well.

Marla J. from Centerport, NY

Karen just GETS IT. I'm finishing my doctoral dissertation and feeling rusty on stats. I need to not only do stats, but really grasp it again and Karen is just simply the best. She makes everything make sense and she completely understands what I need to do. I never feel lost when she explains things because she just knows how to walk you through it. She is probably the only reason I am not having a nervous breakdown over my research right now. Whenever Karen helps me, I feel like I can come up for air!

Tara O. from New York, NY

I was in a desperate situation when I started to work with Karen. I did not have a quantitative background and had been out of school for more than a decade. Mastering statistics was essential for my professional development and I really needed someone to help me learn the material. Karen broke each lesson down into manageable chunks and helped me to focus on the key points of each lecture. Thanks to her, I developed good study habits and was able to do very well in my first statistics class. I advise other students who want to do well in this challenging course to work with Karen - she's the best!

Sodah M. from Glendale, CA

Karen is a wonderful tutor. I am so grateful to have found her- especially in such a tough and demanding time in my academic career. She has helped me feel more at ease with statistical analysis.

Shirley T. from Greenwich, CT

Karen is a phenomenal tutor. She is definitely an SPSS expert; is excited about teaching; and has made statistics less intimidating and much more meaningful than I ever imagined. The time I've spent with her has been well worth my investment.

Mariya S. from New York, NY

Karen was extremely helpful! She was able to tackle a difficult assignment with me and understand exactly what I was trying to do. Not only did she help me understand SPSS, she taught me a few thinsg about statistics in just one session. She definitely set me on the right path in figuring out how to proceed with my assignment so now I can figure it out on my own. Grat tutor! Very approachable and friendly!

Cynthia B. from New York, NY

Karen is super at conveying tough concepts, as well providing the underlying foundations of statistics for social sciences using SPSS software. She is a perfect complement to my on-campus class sessions.

Robin S. from Rockville Centre, NY

I knew from the moment I spoke with Karen B. on the phone that she and I would "work". Consummate professional, understanding, patient, and knows her stuff. She is warm, and approachable. I already told her that she will be with me through my dissertation!

Nisha K. from Forest Hills, NY

Karen is a really great tutor! On my first tutoring session with her she was able to really break through all the fancy statistical language and explain the concepts in a much simpler language. Also, if you are like me, who finds biostats a rather dry subject to begin with, Karen will definitely make the subject a lot more fun and I must say I really learned a lot in 2 hours with her. I highly recommend her as a tutor, especially if you need someone to explain concepts and go over any SPSS material too, she really knows her stuff!

Felicia G. from New York, NY

Karen was a great tutor. She pulled me back from the ledge in Statistics. I took an intensive beginning summer class and the information was over my head. She reminded me that I do have the power to reason out the bad answers and focus on why the good ones are good. Her pedagogy was excellent. Once she combines that with SPSS integration, she might as well teach the class! Bravo!

Christopher V. from Hartsdale, NY

I spent two and a half hours with Karen today, who saved me from my Course II Statistics nightmare! I came in having only a vague idea of how to complete my take-home final exam, and I left with a complete understanding of the material, as well as, complete confidence that I will pass the final and pass the course. Karen did not just give me answers, but made sure I understood how to obtain answers to every question by myself. I will definitely use Karen in the future when I take Course III and Course IV Statistics for my doctoral program. I will also refer Karen to the other members of my cohort! It was a great experience! Definitely call Karen if you are struggling with Stats!

Mai K. from New York, NY

Overall excellent tutor. She was quick to respond to email, was easy to get in touch with in addition to being extremely accommodating with respect to meeting times. Karen was very friendly and nice. She was very through in explaining concepts and practicing different SPSS commands. I enjoyed the lesson, and will be definitely going back for more lessons.

Michele K. from New York, NY

Karen made a very challenging subject for me a lot more fun! I really appreciated our time together. :)

Christopher L. from West Haven, CT

Today Karen and I reviewed many SAS programming concepts and reviewed our work from our first tutoring session until I felt comfortable preparing a presentation for my dissertation committee. I can't recommend Karen highly enough. Great teaching style, extremely smart and knowledgeable about statistical concepts, and working expertise in SPSS and SAS.

Sonja M. from Montclair, NJ

I was in serious danger of failing my semester of Categorical Data Analysis with SAS. I went to Karen hoping that she could somehow help me pass my class and make this particular statistics class understandable. Needless to say that after one session with her I had learned more in a few hours than I had learned the entire year. After a few more sessions my hope of passing actually started increasing and I am not lying and I never thought that I would say this, but I actually was having fun doing statistics. It's not a subject that comes easily to me but I have gained an actual working understanding of the subject matter and now the formulas have a reason for being and I have learned how to apply them. Yesterday I got the news that I passed my class and I know that I would not have been able to do it without Karen's tutoring!

Muteb A. from Hicksville, NY

She was good and understandable but she cares more about time and money we started 3:30 and the end was 5:00 she charged me $1.83 per minutes, I see that not fair because she spent 5 to 10 minutes to open her laptop to access WyzAnt and she could do it after the lesson or not charged me for those minutes plus she asked me some questions about different things and she showed me her necklace which brought by her brother .......anyways if she counted the minutes to gain some time then to charge more money for that she played well .. so my advice to who wants to take her next time focus on what you meet her for and watch the time minute by minute or she going to charge you more than you think...

Arlene F. from Newark, NJ

Karen was able to help me understand SPSS in 1 hour. She is truly excellent. She simplifies everything and I'm able to perform the tasks. Excellent tutor.

Donald C. from Prescott, AZ

This was the 6th week of a 8 week class. Karen had the full week to assist in understanding concepts that were difficult. She was diligent in appointments and follow through. She has a very good grasp of the subject and the week's result were good!

Christine R. from Bronx, NY

Finally I am once again excited about working on my dissertation. Thank you Karen for helping me understand my research and statistics. Your quick assessment of my learning style made a huge difference in relieving my frustration with my statistical work. I love the way you are able to explain the work in a language that I understand.
