Nancy

Experienced Chemistry and Math Tutor - All Levels, All Ages!

My whole approach to teaching can be summed up by a quote from Albert Einstein: "Imagination is More Important than Knowledge." I teach for long-term retention of concepts - not short term retention of facts. In today's connected world, the facts are at our fingertips. It's what we know how to do with those facts that matters! My tutoring sessions focus on problem-solving skills and interpretation of scientific evidence. Along the way, if needed, I'll also share tips and tricks for memorizing...

physical science

Students in physical science cover concepts spanning chemistry and physics. Students need a solid foundation in mathematics to be able to master the many different quantitative problems in a typical physical science course. My background teaching and tutoring chemistry and mathematics enables me to bring these subjects together. I also have experience teaching physics to students preparing to take the Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT), where the physics and chemistry questions are blended in the Physical Science sub-test.

prealgebra

Long-term success in math (and in subjects that use math, like chemistry or physics) depends on a solid foundation of the basic properties of numbers and variables. My focus in pre-algebra tutoring is to make sure a student masters the fundamentals and has the confidence to use them in all sorts of situations. I have experience working with math learners of all ages - middle school through middle age. I especially enjoy helping college students - or prospective college students - dust off their math knowledge in order to score well on college placement exams.

PSAT

My background as a faculty member at liberal arts colleges includes teaching writing and reading across the curriculum. In addition to helping you with key math concepts on the PSAT, I'm also an accomplished writer and teacher of writing. To help you prepare for success on this test - and pave the way for National Merit scholarship funds, I'll help you master some of the fine points of grammar and sentence structure. Critical reading is also an essential skill on this test - my experience teaching first-year seminars at the college level gives me a wealth of interesting material to pick from to help you learn to read critically in many different subject areas.

SAT math

Problem-solving for standardized test questions in math is one of my specialties. As a tutor, I'll help make sure you have a solid conceptual base in all of the topics covered on the test. We'll also spend time working on testing strategies - how to narrow down the choices of right answers, use test time efficiently, and make smart decisions about when to guess or skip a question.

Jake N. from Alpharetta, GA

Nancy went over the concepts of haloalkanes, halogenation, and radical reactions. She taught me a new way to perform the propagation mechanisms for radicals, which I found to be very helpful. We went over this for two hours and I left feeling more confident and understanding of the topic.

Jackie H. from New York, NY

Nancy helped with College level General Chemistry. Explained what I didn't understand in a way that was very helpful. She is paitent and very nice to work with. Super glad we met and will be having her help me again to review for exams as well as ongoing help for the class.

Elizabeth S. from Atlanta, GA

Nancy is organized, patient, thorough, listens, and is able to progress through substantial amounts of information at the student's pace.

John E. from Decatur, GA

Engaged ahead of lesson to be sure she knew what needed to be covered. Very thorough and very knowledgeable.
