Aspergers
My Master's Degree in Counseling plus my teaching certification makes me the perfect combination for teaching a child with Aspergers. I have classroom experience teaching Aspergers students. With Aspergers instruction is presented differently I share the agenda. Students with Asperger Syndrome have difficulty distinguishing between information that is essential and information that is not. In addition, they often do not remember information that others acquire from past experiences or that come as “common sense.†Thus, it is important to state the obvious and “live out loud.†This will help the student understand the meaning behind actions. I use Simplify Language. I Keep language simple and concise, and speak at a slow, deliberate pace. Students with Asperger Syndrome to have difficulty “reading between the lines,†understanding abstract concepts like sarcasm, or interpreting facial expressions. Be clear and specific when providing instructions. Because students with Asperger Syndrome cannot predict upcoming events, they are often unsure what to do. I provide feedback and reassurance frequently so that the student knows he or she is moving in the right direction or completing the correct task. I use frequent check-ins to monitor student progress and stress.

Cheri has been very patient with our teenage son. She is very knowledgeable with different teaching techniques when dealing with certain learning disabilities. She responds by e-mail or phone any time I have a question. Cheri keeps me posted with her daily teaching strategies and what they covered on each tutor sessions. I could not be happier with Ms. Cheri tutoring my seven year old son. While it is a struggle for me to get my son to do even 15 minutes of homework, he will sit with her an hour, 3 times a week, and I do not need to fight him to go to tutoring. She is wonderful with him. Her teaching strategies make it fun and address the areas he needs. She uses a complete approach with my son who truly needs a multisensory approach for learning. My son said, "Ms. Cheri really helps me and I know I can learn easier now." He said if he could, he would give her 3 thumbs up.
