ADD/ADHD
Teaching children with ADD/ADHD can be challenging, but very rewarding. I am patient and understand that each child with ADD/ADHD learns differently and at different paces. Open and frequent communication with student and parent is paramount in the success of each student. I try to find out what interests the students and incorporate that into the lesson being taught, especially if it is something physical. When we have a session it has to be away from distractions and I provide breaks to allow them to move about and refocus. I check to ensure that all of the directions/work/etc. are written down and correctly. Their work needs to be broken down into smaller parts and I provide some type of stress ball/etc. (in case of restlessness/fidgeting). And most importantly I understand that the self esteem of children with ADD/ADHD is usually low and needs to be taken into consideration in all areas of teaching. With my experience (14+ years) in Special Education I have learned many ways to help these children succeed and raise their self esteem! They are so proud when they accomplish goals/tasks that some children may take for granted.
