Cheri K. -- Autism, English, Vocabulary, Writing

From the day I graduated from high school, enrolled in my first undergrad courses, and found my first job, I knew exactly what I wanted to do--teach. I found my niche through working as a camp counselor, substitute teacher, individual assistant, behavior specialist, and behavior consultant. My light shines the brightest when working individually with others. I have a Master's degree in Education and am currently a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA). ADD/ADHD

In addition to the required courses I took in order to complete my Master's degree in Education, I also completed several courses related to special education and diverse learners. The alternative school that I have worked in has given me numerous opportunities and experience in working with students with ADHD/ADD and other co-morbid diagnoses. Aside from my professional experience, I have been with the love of my life, Dan, for 10 years. Dan has ADHD, and we have worked together and I have learned through being his partner about the effects of ADHD. The information I learned in school coupled with personal experience has helped me learn and implement various coping strategies and given me a true understanding of what the symptoms of ADHD look like and how difficult it can be to complete daily tasks and maintain relationships with others. Related Coursework includes: Educational Studies, Characteristics of Diverse Learners, Critical and Cultural Perspectives in Education. Additionally, my undergraduate degree was in English with a minor in Secondary Education. As a result, I participated in many courses aimed at supporting students with diverse needs and special education as well as completed student teaching.

Aspergers

I found my niche in working with individuals with Asperger's/Autism Spectrum Disorder at my first "real" job at an alternative school working as an individual assistant. During this time, I realized how stereotyped my view was of this unique and under-served this population was and became somewhat of an advocate. Over a course of 4 years, I grew more and more passionate for those with Asperger's/ASD, morphed my first "real" job into a career (from individual assistant to behavior specialist to behavior consultant) and completed my Master's Degree in Education (Applied Behavior Analysis) from Johnson State College. Completed graduate coursework as it relates to Asperger's and Autism include: Applied Behavior Analysis 1, 2, and 3, Discrete Trial Learning, Research Methods in Applied Behavior Analysis
